What is the UPR?
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a procedure undertaken by the Un (UN) Human Rights Council. It involves review of the human being rights records of all 192 UN Fellow member States in one case every 4 years.
The UPR is an opportunity for Australia to:
- accept stock of how well we are protecting the human rights of all people in Australia; and
- inform the international customs of the human rights situation in Australia

Second Cycle of the UPR
Commonwealth of australia's review under the second cycle of the UPR took place on ix November 2015.
The Australian Human Rights Commission transmitted a submission to the UPR Working Group on 22 March 2015. The Australian NGO Coalition also transmitted a submission.
The Australian Regime Written report to the Second UPR was submitted in July 2015.
The UPR review was based on the Authorities report together with the following information:
- Data contained in the reports of treaty bodies, special procedures, including observations and comments by the State concerned, and other relevant official United Nations documents, compiled in a study prepared past the OHCHR
- Information provided by the Australian Man Rights Commission submission and the Australian NGO Coalition submission and other relevant stakeholders to the universal periodic review, which was summarized by the OHCHR in a document
110 countries spoke at the review and provided 291 recommendations. The Australian Authorities provided Australia's response to the Written report of the Working Group on the UPR at the 31st Regular Session Homo Rights Quango (17 March 2016). 150 recommendations were accepted, 50 were noted to consider further and 90 were noted.

Beginning Cycle of the UPR
Australia appeared earlier the Un Human Rights Council's Working Group on the UPR on 27 January 2011.
53 countries asked Australia about its homo rights record and made 145 recommendations. These covered a wide range of human rights bug including the treatment of asylum seekers, Ancient and Torres Strait Islander peoples, multiculturalism and racism, and the condition of Australia'southward obligations nether international human rights police.

Almanac UPR Progress Reports
The Australian Human Rights Commission reported annually on the status of implementation of the 1st cycle UPR recommendations. These reports were prepared on behalf of the Australian Quango of Human Rights Agencies (ACHRA), a body that brings together all Commonwealth, State and Territory anti-discrimination and human being rights bodies.
The reports were an annual reflection on Australia's progress in addressing commitments that the Government fabricated to protect human being rights from the 1st cycle review, as well every bit ways of identifying emerging and ongoing concerns.
